How to File for Unemployment in Iowa

Iowa merged its entire unemployment process — initial filing, weekly claims, and job search — into a single system called IowaWORKS in mid-2025, so claimants now manage everything from one login instead of separate sites for benefits and job search.

What You'll Need

✓ Social Security number ✓ Mailing address, phone number and email address ✓ Last employer's name, address and phone number ✓ Reason for job separation ✓ Bank account and routing number for direct deposit
  1. 1

    Register on IowaWORKS

Go to iowaworks.gov, choose Sign In/Register, then Individual Registration to create your account.

  2. 2

    Verify your identity with ID.me

Multi-factor identity verification is required as part of registration and again each week you certify.

  3. 3

    Gather dependent information

Iowa factors dependents into your benefit calculation, so have names, birthdates, and Social Security numbers ready — a spouse counts if their gross wages were $120 or less the week before you file.

  4. 4

    File your initial claim online

Applications can be submitted 24 hours a day through iowaworks.gov.

  5. 5

    Complete four weekly reemployment activities

At least three of your four required weekly activities must be actual job applications; job search logs are automatically tracked if done inside IowaWORKS.

  6. 6

File a weekly claim (except Saturdays)

Certify online any day but Saturday, logging into ID.me each time to confirm your identity.
