How to File for Unemployment in Tennessee

Tennessee ties the length of your benefits directly to the state's own unemployment rate — when it's at or below 5.5%, claimants are capped at just 12 weeks of payments, among the shortest in the country, with a maximum of $325 a week. Since the state's e-Services system launched in 2024, you also have to build an online account before you can file anything.

   Gather your work history

   Have your Social Security number and recent employer information ready before you begin.

   Create an account on Jobs4TN's e-Services system

   Go to Jobs4TN.gov, select File for Unemployment, and sign up for an online account if you don't already have one.

   File your claim online

   Submit your claim through your e-Services account, or call the department's Help Desk at (844) 224-5818 if you need assistance.

   Watch for two letters

   One tells you your potential benefit amount; the other explains the agency's eligibility decision on your claim.

   Register for work and search weekly

   You're expected to actively look for work and report your search activity as part of certifying.

   Answer weekly certification questions about your job search and any earnings to keep payments coming — remember Tennessee's maximum is only 12 weeks when the state unemployment rate is 5.5% or below.
