How to File for Unemployment in North Carolina

North Carolina's Division of Employment Security runs claims through MyNCUIBenefits and builds in a mandatory unpaid 'waiting week' — your first eligible week never gets paid, but you still have to file the certification for it or you'll delay everything after. Identity verification is also non-negotiable: you'll do it online through ID.me or bring paperwork to a participating post office in person.

   Create a MyNCUIBenefits account

   Register online with your Social Security number, and Alien Number if applicable, plus a personal email address to set up your claimant profile.

   Confirm your account by email and sign in

   Click the confirmation link DES emails you, then sign in — you may need a one-time passcode as part of multi-factor authentication.

   File your initial claim

   From the 'Action Required' box in your account, select 'File a New Unemployment Insurance Claim' and complete the application.

   Verify your identity

   Complete identity verification either online through ID.me or in person by bringing the required paperwork to a participating U.S. post office.

   File your weekly certification, including your unpaid waiting week

   Certify every week, starting with the first unpaid waiting week, within 14 days of that week ending, or you won't get paid for it.

   Track your status and respond to DES mail

   Watch for letters or emails about your eligibility and benefit amount, and check your account anytime for a status update.
